May is Better Hearing and Speech Month!

The month of May—Better Hearing and Speech Month—is a great time to raise awareness about communication. The basic ability to communicate and connect with other people is essential to being able to function in school, at work, and within the larger community. It’s a critically important part of everyday life, yet many people face challenges related to communication, particularly involving speech, language, or hearing. Speech-language pathologists are trained to help people improve their communication and language skills. In the video below, we describe some of the behaviors that may indicate a delay or problem in the areas of speech, language, or hearing.  If your child or student is struggling in some of these areas, an assessment by a speech-language pathologist may be useful.  You can also find more info in last year's blog post, Celebrating Better Hearing and Speech Month Because...Communication Works!, which focused on signs of delay as well as classroom strategies that can help. By Elizabeth Sautter, M.A., CCC-SLP
