At CW, we love using books to introduce and discuss topics related to speech, language, and social communication. With April’s focus on autism awareness and acceptance, we’d like to share one of our favorite children’s book to help kids understand what autism is all about. In The Autism Acceptance Book, author Ellen Sabin uses concrete examples to explain what it might feel like to be a person with autism, how to understand what that person is experiencing, and how to be a friend to that person. For example, she describes the way people with autism often hear many sounds that others can easily ignore. She encourages readers to step into the shoes of someone with autism by imagining a loud fire engine right near them or by sitting someplace noisy and writing down all the different sounds they hear. Then, she makes suggestions for being a good friend, such as stopping the noise if it’s in your control or asking an adult for help. The book is an excellent conversation starter, educational tool, and activity book that encourages kids to understand and accept other people’s differences and find ways to treat others with compassion.Link to purchase: http://amzn.to/2FKM7CF
